The letter
To the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission,
Australians book flights against advertised fares that leave out what most of us need: a cabin bag, a checked bag, a seat next to the people we travel with, and the card fee. Those costs appear one click at a time, after we've spent time and care choosing a flight. FaresFair measures the gap every six hours from live fares; on some airlines the real price sits well above the fare we're shown (the drip index).
We ask the ACCC to use its powers and its voice to:
- Have airlines and booking sites show, next to every advertised fare, what it costs with a cabin bag, a checked bag and a chosen seat.
- Have every optional fee (bags, seats, changes, refunds and card fees) published in one clear table per airline, in Australian dollars, before booking.
- Let people choose their bag and seat from the very first screen, with the full price for those choices shown in the search results, so the total doesn't climb one page at a time between search and payment.
- Treat drip pricing on airfares as a priority in its work on pricing and unfair practices.
The fare we see should be the fare we pay.
