40 airlines · scored from what they publish

See-through airlines.

How clearly each airline lets you see what a trip will really cost, out of 100. The clearer the airline, the clearer its name: the ones that hide their prices are fogged over.

How the score works.

  • Published prices, 40 points. For every fare type in every route zone, can you find what a cabin bag, a checked bag, a seat, a meal, a date change and a refund cost? Each one the airline doesn't publish loses its share.
  • The drip, 30 points. How much a cabin bag, a checked bag and a seat add to the advertised fare. From live fares once we've priced 20 of them, otherwise from the airline's published fees on a typical fare. A drip of 40% or more scores zero. If some of those prices aren't published, this part is capped at half; if none are, it's zero.
  • Catches, 20 points. Each documented catch costs points by how much it bites: bring the card you paid with 6, only shown at the payment step 5, extras ticked unless you untick them 5, pay or sit apart 5, miss one flight, lose the rest 5, the cabin bag that gets weighed at the gate 4, forget to pre-buy and it costs far more 3, charged per flight, not per trip 3, other catches 2. Unpublished prices are counted once, above.
  • Paying, 10 points. No card fee scores full marks; a card fee you can dodge by paying another way scores half; one you can't avoid scores none.

A score is only as current as the pages behind it: each airline's page lists every source and the date we read it. Think a score is wrong? Use "This fee looks wrong" on that airline's page and we'll recheck.
